Password Security
-
Never share your NMEnergy@Home
password: Our member service representatives
will never ask you for your password. If you believe someone
has learned your password, please change it immediately and
contact us.
-
Create
a secure password: Choose a password that uses
a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. For example,
$mom2!ve. Avoid choosing obvious words or dates such as a nickname
or your birth date.
-
Keep
your password unique: Don't use the same password
for NM Energy FCU and other online services such as AOL, MSN
or Yahoo. Using the same password for multiple websites increases
the chances that someone could obtain your password and gain
access to your accounts.
Use Your Account, Credit
Card or Debit Card Wisely
-
Use
Your Credit Card:
It's a good practice to pay with credit cards, because under
federal law (and your credit card agreement) your liability
for an unauthorized charge is limited to $50. When using a credit
card online, look for an unbroken key or padlock (a graphical
icon usually located in the bottom corner of the web page),
or for a policy that indicates use of strong security technology
such as SSL. This indicates that your credit card data is transmitted
securely. Keep your passwords safe, and don't share them with
other people.
-
Don't
share your account: Don't use your NM Energy
FCU account to collect or transfer money for someone else. These
types of activity are often conducted as forms of money laundering
or mail fraud and may result in significant criminal penalties.
If someone contacts you and asks you to transfer money on their
behalf, you should deny the request and contact
us immediately.
-
Look
for legitimate sites and know your merchant:
Examine all privacy and security seals before doing business
with a particular website and make sure they are legitimate.
It's just good business to be familiar with the name or reputation
of any company you're dealing with. You can often find helpful
information about online companies from directories and rating
services. The Federal
Trade Commission maintains a web site that provides many
consumers guides, lists of tips, and links to helpful resources.
-
Protect
your privacy: Know what information the merchant
is collecting about you, how it will be used, and if they share
it with or sell it to others. You can do this by checking the
web site to make sure there is a privacy policy posted, and
that you're comfortable with the way your personal information
is treated under that policy. Look for seals from privacy enforcement
organizations like TRUSTe or BBBOnLine. Be cautious if you're
asked to supply personal information not needed to make a purchase,
such as your Social Security number or personal financial account
information.
-
Know
Problem Resolution Information: Know expected
delivery dates, shipping and handling fees, warranties, return
policies, and other important information. Look for an email
address to write to (or a phone number to call) if you have
a question, a problem, or if you need help. Once you make
the purchase and then have a problem isn’t the best
time to look for this information.
-
Keep
Good Records: Make sure to print or save electronically
any records related to your online transactions. This will
help you keep track of shipping dates, shipping and handling
fees, and other details of your transactions. Look for an
automatic email confirmation to be sent along with online
order tracking.
-
Filing
a Complaint: To get free information on how
to spot, stop, and avoid problems, call the Federal Trade
Commission, toll-free, at 1-877-FTC-HELP (382-4357) or visit
the FirstGov
for Consumers and the FTC
Consumer Protection sites.
