Currency Transaction Reporting

CTR – frequently asked questions

Posted: December 14, 2009

The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) educational brochure
helps answer consumers’ questions about the Bank Secrecy Act requirement for reports on currency transactions involving more than $10,000.

The brochure (PDF), Notice to Consumers: A CTR Reference Guide,” is intended to answer the most-frequently asked questions about currency transaction reports. (en espanol)

These brochures point out that large transactions aren’t illegal but that financial institutions are required to obtain information from consumers when they occur. They also discuss violations of BSA rules, such as transaction structuring to avoid reporting, and related civil and criminal penalties.

A similar brochure was released for casino transactions – CTR-C (PDF)

“The perfect gift. The perfect solution”
Visa TravelMoney® and Gift Cards

Posted: December 14, 2009

NM Energy's new travel cards are pre-loaded with your spending money before you leave, enabling you to easily keep track of exactly how much you are spending while you are away from home. If you have funds left on your card at the end of your travels, you can choose to keep them on your card and top them up the next time you travel (up to 24 months from date of purchase), or withdraw the remaining cash from an ATM.

The Gift Card is a Visa card that is pre-loaded with funds that the card recipient can spend at any merchant that accepts Visa Debit cards. You choose how much you load onto the card and the recipient chooses what to spend it on.

Get more detailed information at the Travelex Cash Passport homepage.

Members who would like further information on purchasing Visa TravelMoney® and Gift Cards can contact NM Energy FCU through your InfoDesk.

Truth in Lending

Change in Federal Regulations
Regarding Member Loans

Posted: October 16, 2009

Frequently Asked Questions

Due to recent Federal Regulations, members with certain loan types must receive their Loan Statement 21-days prior to their Due Date. For the Credit Union to comply with this regulation we must change the due date on these loan types to the "27th of the month" in order for members to receive their Statement within the required period of time.

For detailed information on how these changes may affect your loan and payment schedule, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions.

Members who would like further information regarding this issue can contact NM Energy FCU through your InfoDesk.

Beware of false e-mails
Posted: May 12, 2006

The latest scam known as “phishing” is a fraudulent e-mail.
An email appearing to be from the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU) was sent to both the general public and to credit union members. This fraudulent e-mail asked for the recipient to click on a link. If the recipient proceeded, the link directed them to a counterfeit website and states “As part of our security measures, we regularly screen activity in Federal Credit Union network. We recently noticed the following issue on your account: A recent review of your transaction history determined that we require an update of your account in order to provide you with secure services.”

NAFCU does not ask credit union members for such personal information. Anyone receiving an e-mail that purports to be from NAFCU requesting account information should consider it a fraudulent attempt to obtain personal account data for illegal purposes. If you responded to such an e-mail and provided any confidential account information, please notify your credit union immediately. Take any additional steps recommended by your credit union to protect your account.

Please forward any e-mail phishing message to federal investigators at JWilson@IC3.gov

FTC warns against spoofed credit report sites
Posted: January 25, 2006

Important information from the Federal Trade Commission, the nation’s consumer protection agency: AnnualCreditReport.com is the ONLY authorized online source for you to get a free credit report under federal law. You can get a free report from each of the three national credit reporting companies every 12 months. Some other sites claim to offer "free" credit reports, but may charge you for another product if you accept a "free" report.
